Harjit Singh Sodhi is the Founder & President of Mission Baba Nanak, an initiative focused on preserving and reviving Sikh heritage tied to Guru Nanak’s historic visit to Baghdad. In 2023, Sodhi helped place the Baghdad site on the agenda of major Sikh institutions, meeting SGPC officials in Amritsar to request that the Committee take up maintenance and reconstruction of the shrine area associated with Guru Nanak.

Under Sodhi’s leadership, Mission Baba Nanak advocates for a practical, coalition-based approach: work with SGPC and relevant governments to stabilize and restore what remains of the Baba Nanak Shrine and make respectful access possible again. The site rediscovered by Sikh soldiers in the early 20th century and now largely lost except for fragments, has long been recognized in community histories as connected with Guru Nanak’s sojourn and dialogues with local scholars.

The effort sits within a broader, renewed push across the community to see the Baghdad site protected and rebuilt. Recent appeals by public figures have asked national governments to engage Iraq on reconstruction, reflecting the same goal that Sodhi and Mission Baba Nanak have been pressing: dignified preservation of a place that matters to Sikhs worldwide.

We are deeply grateful for the global Sikh community’s support for Mission Baba Nanak. Please note, Official donations will only be accepted through this website once all approvals are complete. Mission Baba Nanak Baghdad will never request personal transfers or informal payments.
